Of these, 44 babies were born at other healthcare institutions and referred to Malda Medical College after their condition worsened, while 16 were born at the medical college.
The high number of newborn deaths has prompted the state Health Department to seek detailed information on each case from the hospital administration. Officials will examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths to identify any possible gaps in treatment or referral.

The referral system is a key aspect of this case. Since 44 of the 60 newborns had reached Malda Medical College after being referred from other healthcare institutions, the Health Department is also examining the role of other hospitals, nursing homes and block-level health centres.
