Washington: US President Donald Trump has sparked a new trade and diplomatic confrontation with Canada by threatening to block the opening of a major cross-border bridge connecting Ontario and Michigan. In a strongly worded post on his Truth Social platform, Trump accused Canada of treating the United States “very unfairly” for decades and warned that the bridge would not open unless Washington receives what he called “full compensation.”
Trump also shared an image of the nearly completed bridge on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting the massive structure spanning the Detroit River. The image underscored the strategic and economic importance of the project, which is expected to significantly impact North American trade once operational.
Claims Of Unfairness
In his post, Trump said Canada has consistently taken advantage of the United States through fast and unfair trade practices. He claimed the bridge was built in a way that benefits both countries but excludes American interests.
Trump said the bridge was constructed with virtually no US content, despite being located on both the Canadian and American sides. According to him, Canada expects the US to allow this situation without objection, something he said his administration would not accept.
Obama Waiver Criticism
Trump sharply criticized former US President Barack Obama, accusing him of giving Canada a waiver that allowed the bridge project to bypass Buy American requirements. Trump said this decision enabled Canada to avoid using American products during construction.
He claimed that as a result, American steel and other US-made materials were excluded from the project, which he described as another example of Canada benefiting at America’s expense.

Trump also accused Canada of blocking American products from its markets. He specifically mentioned US spirits, beverages, and alcoholic products, claiming that Ontario does not allow these items on store shelves.
