Architect of Dollar Industries’ growth, known for leadership, innovation, and community service
New Delhi: Shri Dindayal Gupta, eminent industrialist and Founder & Chairman Emeritus of Dollar Industries Limited, breathed his last in Kolkata today following age-related health issues, leaving behind a profound legacy in the hosiery and apparel sector.
A visionary leader and the driving force behind the company’s remarkable journey, Shri Dindayal Gupta led Dollar Industries Limited for over five decades with unwavering commitment, foresight, and integrity. Under his stewardship, the company grew from modest beginnings into one of India’s leading manufacturers in the hosiery and apparel segment, achieving a business scale exceeding ₹1700 crore.
Born on 13 September 1937 in Manheru village in Bhiwani district of Haryana, into a humble family with limited means, Shri Gupta’s life exemplified perseverance, resilience, and the courage to dream big. In 1962, he moved to Kolkata (then Calcutta), where he began manufacturing and marketing hosiery products tailored to customers’ needs and budgets. He expanded operations through the development of manufacturing and finishing facilities, built an extensive retail and distribution network, and tapped into underserved markets often overlooked by others.
In 1972, he laid the foundation of Dollar Industries Limited. His entrepreneurial vision and relentless dedication transformed the company into a trusted and widely recognised brand, known for quality, innovation, and strong market presence. The company was among the first to expand into underserved regions such as Madhya Pradesh (now Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh), the Seven Sisters of North-East India, and hill districts like Darjeeling.
Beyond his business accomplishments, Shri Gupta remained deeply committed to social and community service. He was actively associated with the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha and held key leadership roles in various branches of the Bengal Pratinidhi Sabha. He also served as a former Vice-President of the Sarvadeshik Arya Pratinidhi Sabha and was an active member of the Paropakarini Sabha, Ajmer. He played a pivotal role in establishing a burns unit and related infrastructure at the Marwari Relief Society in Kolkata.
In the field of education, Shri Gupta made significant contributions as the founding force behind Haryana Vidya Mandir in Bidhannagar, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal. He also supported several Gurukuls as a co-founder and patron and was instrumental in reviving the school in his native village, Manheru. His enduring belief was that access to education is fundamental to social progress and national development.
He also contributed to organisations supporting the elderly, including Maharshi Dayanand Yogashram, Tripura, and the Sukhanand Foundation. His contributions extended beyond industry, leaving a meaningful and lasting impact on society.
Over the course of his distinguished career, Shri Gupta received numerous awards and recognitions, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the West Bengal Hosiery Association and the Sanmarg Business Award.
Shri Dindayal Gupta is survived by his wife, four sons, and grandchildren, who are currently carrying forward the legacy of Dollar Industries Limited.
