India’s Space-Maritime Power in Focus as MERI Group Holds Strategic Conference

MERI Group and SIA India discuss India’s space-maritime strategy, satellite surveillance, AI, NavIC, maritime security and the $30 trillion economy vision for 2047

New Delhi:India’s growing capabilities in space technology and maritime security came under the spotlight at a conference organised by MERI Group of Institutions in collaboration with the Space Industry Association of India (SIA India) in New Delhi.

The event explored how integrating the country’s space and maritime sectors can strengthen national security, economic growth, the blue economy and India’s Viksit Bharat vision for 2047.

Defence experts, scientists, academics and policy leaders participated in discussions on satellite surveillance, artificial intelligence, navigation systems, maritime data and emerging technologies.

Experts Call for Closer Space-Maritime Cooperation

Lalit Aggarwal, Vice-President of MERI Group, said the boundaries between space and maritime domains are becoming increasingly interconnected. He called on universities to promote interdisciplinary research and develop professionals who understand the combined requirements of space technology, maritime affairs, data science and national security.

Satellite Surveillance Can Enhance Indian Ocean Security

Vice Admiral Ajendra Bahadur Singh (Retd.) highlighted the need for stronger surveillance across the Indian Ocean Region.

According to him, conventional surveillance systems need to be supported by space-based Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) and integrated sensor networks. Such capabilities can help track maritime activity, protect important sea lanes and respond to grey-zone threats.

AI Can Turn Satellite Data Into Actionable Intelligence

Lt. Gen. P.J.S. Pannu (Retd.), Dean of the Department of Space Studies, stressed that India needs a robust indigenous data ecosystem to achieve greater technological self-reliance.

He highlighted the importance of integrating GIS, PNT, ISR and AI to process satellite information and convert it into actionable intelligence that can support strategic planning and decision-making.

Technology Can Boost India’s Maritime Economy

The discussions also focused on the economic applications of space technology. Experts said hydrographic surveys and digital maritime mapping can improve navigation, shipping operations and logistics.

Satellite observations can also support the fisheries sector by helping fishing communities identify potentially productive fishing zones.

Space Technology for Coastal Disaster Management

Satellite-based weather observations, ocean forecasting and cyclone tracking were identified as important tools for improving disaster preparedness.

Better access to real-time information can strengthen early-warning systems and help coastal authorities respond more effectively to cyclones and other maritime emergencies.

Focus on NavIC and Small-SAR Satellites

Participants advocated increased investment in small Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite constellations, indigenous Positioning, Navigation and Timing capabilities and the wider use of NavIC.

The conference also emphasised stronger partnerships between the government, Indian Navy, shipping industry, private technology companies, universities and research institutions.

A Strategic Roadmap for 2047

The conference highlighted that integrating space and maritime capabilities can deliver benefits across national security, shipping, fisheries, disaster management, innovation and the blue economy.

Experts said building a coordinated space-maritime ecosystem could help India strengthen technological self-reliance and contribute to the country’s Viksit Bharat and $30 trillion economy goals by 2047.
