Mary Kom appeals for privacy as divorce dispute with ex-husband remains unresolved publicly amid scrutiny
Indian boxing icon and Olympic bronze medallist MC Mary Kom recently opened up about the most difficult phase of her life. She spoke about her painful divorce, serious money troubles, and emotional breakdown that she faced quietly away from the spotlight.
She said her marriage began to collapse in 2022, when she was recovering from an injury. During that period, she realised she had been “living a lie”, a truth that deeply shook her both personally and emotionally.
Marriage Ends After Two Decades
Mary Kom and her former husband Karung Onkholer, also known as Onler, spent over 20 years together and have four children. The couple officially separated in 2023, ending a long marriage that had stayed private for years.
After the separation, Mary Kom moved to Faridabad with her children. She later requested privacy and asked people not to spread rumours about her personal life.
Financial Struggles Surface Publicly
Mary Kom also revealed that she went through near bankruptcy after the separation. She said she lost property that she had bought using her own earnings from boxing.
She further claimed that loans were taken in her name without her clear knowledge and that land she owned was mortgaged. These discoveries added to her stress while she was already dealing with injury and uncertainty about her career.
Ex-Husband Makes Serious Allegations
In response, Onler strongly denied all claims of financial misuse. Instead, he made serious allegations against Mary Kom’s personal life.
He claimed that Mary Kom had an extramarital relationship with a junior boxer in 2013. He also alleged that from 2017 onwards, she was involved with someone linked to the Mary Kom Boxing Academy. Onler said he has WhatsApp messages as proof and is ready to present them.
Onler Denies Financial Accusations
Onler rejected allegations that he took crores of rupees or misused Mary Kom’s money and property. He pointed out that he currently lives in a rented house in Delhi, saying this proves he did not gain financially.
He challenged Mary Kom to show documents such as loan papers and property records to support her claims. However, he said he does not want to take the matter further to court because of their children.

As a result, the dispute between Mary Kom and her ex-husband has drawn massive public and media attention. Many people have noted the sharp contrast between her achievements in boxing and the personal struggles she now faces.
So far, no court ruling has confirmed either side’s claims, and the matter remains unresolved.

Meanwhile, Mary Kom has appealed to the public to respect her privacy. She asked people to stop spreading rumours, saying the emotional damage from the separation has already been heavy.
