New Delhi: August 22, 2025

A fun sightseeing trip took a terrible turn on Friday afternoon when a tour bus with 54 people on board overturned on Interstate-90 near Pembroke, New York, killing five people and injuring dozens.

The bus was returning from Niagara Falls to New York City, when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle and may have swerved into a ditch.

Passengers and fatalities

Authorities confirmed the bus had 54 passengers and many of them were tourists from India, China, the Philippines, and some from Middle Eastern countries. The horrific accident caused five adults to lose their lives, and 49 more were injured for fractures or head trauma to serious internal injuries. Hospitals reportedly had several patients in surgical wards or critical condition, and the victims ranged from one year old to seventy-four years old.

Rescue Emergency

The accident caused a system emergency response. Many helicopters and ambulances transported injured passengers to various hospitals, including Erie County Medical Center and Buffalo General.

Because many of the victims could not speak English, translators were used for helping the medical staff and families.

New York Governor’s Response

New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed grief over the tragedy, confirming that five lives were lost. “Our hearts are with their loved ones during this difficult time,” she said, extending condolences to the victims’ families.

Governor Hochul also stated that she had been briefed about the accident and that her administration was working closely with the New York State Police and local authorities. “My team is coordinating with police and local officials who are working to rescue and provide assistance to everyone involved,” she noted.

What Went Wrong?

Initial reports indicated a possible loss of control due to distractions of the driver. Mechanical failure or alcohol use has been ruled out by officials. Investigators also reported that most of the passengers were not wearing seatbelts, which was a likely reason for several of them being ejected from the bus on impact.

The National Transit Safety Board (NTSB) and state police are investigating the accident.

Broader Concerns

This incident has sparked discussions about the requirements of seat belts on tour buses and if there should be stronger regulations around passengers wearing seatbelts for long-distance travel.
