Father murdered in Lucknow after NEET exam dispute; son files missing person report, dismembers body, conceals torso in plastic drum

Lucknow: In a shocking incident in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, a 21-year-old B.Com student, Akshat Pratap Singh, allegedly shot his father, Manvendra Pratap Singh at their home in Ashiana Sector L. The confrontation reportedly happened early on February 20, 2026, after repeated arguments over Akshat preparing for the NEET exam, which his father wanted him to pursue.

Manvendra, aged around 50 and owner of a local medical lab, clashed with his son over career choices. The fight escalated, and Akshat allegedly used his father’s licensed rifle to shoot him dead. The incident reportedly occurred in front of Akshat’s younger sister, who was threatened to remain silent.

False Missing Report

After the murder, Akshat tried to hide the crime by filing a missing person report, saying his father had left for Delhi early that morning. Police noticed inconsistencies in his story, which made them suspicious.

During questioning, Akshat confessed to killing his father after repeated pressure regarding the NEET exam.

Hides Body In Drum

After shooting his father, Akshat moved the body from the third floor to the ground floor and began dismembering it. He placed parts of the body into a plastic drum inside the house and threw other parts in remote areas near Sadrauna.

Police recovered the drum containing mutilated remains and called forensic experts to collect evidence, including bloodstains in the house and Akshat’s car, along with a bullet from the shooting scene.

Family Background Details

The Singh family is originally from Jalaun district. Manvendra’s wife died about nine years ago, leaving him to raise Akshat and his younger daughter. Akshat had studied Biology in Class XII but later chose BCom. Another family member works in the Uttar Pradesh Police.

Police said Akshat had also been helping run a liquor store owned by his father but felt unhappy with the responsibilities and constant pressure to meet his father’s academic expectations.

Investigation And Charges

Police have registered Akshat under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including murder and hiding evidence. Investigators are searching nearby areas to find the remaining body parts and are conducting post-mortem examinations. The rifle and bullet recovered have been sent for forensic testing.

Senior officers are overseeing the investigation and collecting evidence to prepare a detailed case file for court.

Public Shocked Nationwide

The incident has shocked Lucknow residents and raised a national discussion about academic pressure and student mental health. According to experts, many students experience severe stress when preparing for exams such as NEET, but they do not resort to violence.

This terrible instance shows how severe pressure can lead to disastrous steps, emphasizing the need for enhanced mental health care for students.
