Wikipedia celebrates a quarter century, strengthens partnerships with AI companies, and empowers human editors worldwide
Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia, celebrated its 25th anniversary on January 15, 2026, marking 25 years since its launch in 2001. Over this time, it has grown from a small experiment into the world’s largest online knowledge platform, with more than 65 million articles in over 300 languages and billions of monthly page views.
The nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation runs Wikipedia. It launched a “25 Years of Wikipedia” campaign to mark the milestone. The campaign features a video docuseries of volunteer editors, a digital time capsule, and interactive content about Wikipedia’s history and future.
Wikipedia’s Growth and Global Impact
Since its launch in 2001, Wikipedia has become a global hub for free and reliable knowledge. Its articles are used by search engines, students, researchers, and AI models that rely on structured, human-curated data.
The platform has upgraded technically with modern servers, mobile-first design, and strong infrastructure, handling heavy traffic efficiently. Wikimedia CEO Maryana Iskander said Wikipedia’s growth depends on volunteers. She stressed that human curation is essential for accuracy and neutrality, especially in the AI era.
Wikipedia in the AI Era
Wikipedia remains a key resource for AI tools while keeping human editors central. Generative AI now assists volunteers by automating tasks, improving translations, and detecting errors, freeing editors for high-value work.
Founder Jimmy Wales said Wikipedia content is trusted and human-verified, making it ideal for AI training. He also noted that companies using Wikipedia should share infrastructure costs to support the nonprofit.
Wikipedia Embraces the AI Era
Rather than being replaced by AI, Wikipedia has positioned itself as a critical resource for AI tools while ensuring that human editors remain central. Generative AI now assists volunteers by automating repetitive tasks, improving translations, and detecting errors, allowing human contributors to focus on high-value content creation.
Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales highlighted that its content is trusted and human-verified, making it ideal for AI training. He stressed that companies benefiting from Wikipedia should contribute to its infrastructure costs.

New Partnerships With Tech and AI Companies
On its 25th anniversary, Wikipedia announced licensing agreements with Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, Perplexity, and Mistral AI. These agreements, through Wikimedia Enterprise, allow companies enterprise-grade access to Wikipedia content for AI training and commercial use.
The Enterprise program ensures that tech companies can use Wikipedia at scale while financially supporting the nonprofit, helping maintain servers, infrastructure, and volunteer programs.
Human Knowledge Remains Central
Despite increasing AI integration, Wikipedia continues to prioritize human volunteers. In fact, the Wikimedia Foundation’s AI strategy treats AI as an assistant rather than a replacement. Therefore, human curation remains essential for ensuring reliability, neutrality, and high-quality content across millions of articles.
Moreover, the Foundation reaffirmed that Wikipedia will remain free. However, it emphasized that sustaining infrastructure requires ongoing support from both users and commercial partners. Consequently, community contributions and partnerships remain vital to maintain servers, technology, and volunteer programs.
Celebrating 25 Years of Collaboration
To mark its 25th anniversary, Wikimedia launched several initiatives. For example, it released a docuseries highlighting volunteer editors worldwide, showcasing their contributions and stories. Additionally, a digital time capsule preserved Wikipedia’s history and key milestones, capturing the evolution of human knowledge. Furthermore, interactive content was introduced to engage readers and encourage broader participation in the platform.
As Wikipedia moves into its next quarter century, it continues to blend human expertise with technology. Thus, the platform ensures that free, reliable knowledge remains accessible to everyone, even in the age of AI. In this way, Wikipedia balances innovation with volunteer-driven accuracy, securing its role as a trusted global information source.
