A sudden wall of water, ice, mud and boulders swept away villages, roads and bridges; hundreds remain missing, while Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in India remain on alert
New Delhi: Nepal is currently facing a devastating natural disaster that has transformed parts of the Himalayan region within just a few hours. On August 26, a catastrophic flash flood struck near the Nepal-Tibet border, sweeping through villages, roads, bridges, hydropower projects and critical infrastructure in the border region. The situation became even more dangerous as the flood was not limited to water. Huge amounts of ice, mud, rocks and debris came rushing downhill, destroying almost everything in their path.
By August 27, reports had put the death toll at more than 160, while a large number of people were still missing. Foreign nationals and a significant number of Indians are also among those affected. Many people were in the Nepal-Tibet region for the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage and other religious or tourism-related journeys.
But the biggest question remains how did such a sudden and powerful flood occur?
Not Just Rain: Broken Ice and Rock Debris Triggered the Disaster
To understand the disaster, it is important to look at Nepal’s Rasuwa district and the adjoining Tibetan region of China. In the high Himalayan terrain, a large mass of ice and rock suddenly became unstable and collapsed downhill. In the initial hours, an earthquake was considered a possible cause, but subsequent scientific assessments did not find a major earthquake capable of directly explaining the disaster.
According to assessments by the US Geological Survey, glacial collapse and an ice-rock debris flow appear to have played a major role. A massive quantity of ice and rock broke loose at high altitude and moved downhill, suddenly filling the river system with an enormous volume of water and debris.
This is why the event was very different from a normal monsoon flood. During a conventional flood, water levels generally rise over a period of time. In a flash flood, water can surge downstream within a very short period. In this case, the flow also carried ice, rocks, mud and heavy debris, making it far more destructive.
Satellite analysis has also identified an ice-rock landslide around 20 kilometres northeast of the Rasuwagadhi border area. The landslide generated a sudden debris-filled flood in the Lhende Khola.

Bhote Koshi and Trishuli Rivers Became the Pathways of Destruction
The Bhote Koshi River and the connected river system played a crucial role in the disaster. The sudden surge of water and debris moved rapidly downstream through the river channel, with the impact later extending into the Trishuli river system.
Several areas of Rasuwa district were badly affected, particularly settlements located along the river. Houses and vehicles were buried or swept away by the debris. Hydropower projects suffered damage, while important road connections were destroyed.
The Rasuwagadhi border area was also severely affected. On the Tibetan side, the Gyirong region suffered damage to roads, electricity infrastructure and communication networks. This means the disaster was not confined to Nepal; its impact was also felt across the border in China’s Tibet region.
The Speed of the Flood Left People With Almost No Time to React
One of the most frightening aspects of the flash flood was its speed. Local residents had extremely little time to understand the danger and move to safer locations.
Reports suggest that several people suddenly saw a massive wall of water and debris rushing towards them. Some attempted to save themselves by climbing onto higher ground, trees and buildings. Several homes were swept away by the river.
The rescue operation has also become extremely challenging. With roads and bridges destroyed, reaching affected areas by land has become difficult. Damage to electricity and communication networks has further complicated efforts to establish the exact number of missing people.
Large Number of Indian Citizens Also Affected
The disaster in Nepal has also raised serious concerns in India. A significant number of Indian citizens are reportedly among those missing. Many Indians had travelled to the region for the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage.
As of August 27, various government and media reports have indicated that more than 100 Indians may be missing. Some reports have put the number above 130. However, the figure remains fluid because rescue operations and identification efforts are still underway.
This has prompted the Indian government and various state authorities to remain in contact with Nepalese officials and work to gather information about affected Indian citizens.
Why Is India Now Concerned?
The Nepal flood is important for India not only because Indian citizens are among those affected. Another major concern is the additional water that could move downstream through river systems.
Several rivers originating in or flowing through Nepal enter the plains of India. These include the Gandak, Kosi, Bagmati, Ghaghra, Rapti and other river systems. Depending on the situation, a sudden increase in water flow in Nepal can affect river levels downstream in India. Indian authorities are therefore closely monitoring these river systems.
Bihar and Uttar Pradesh Remain Under Close Watch
In India, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are currently among the states receiving particular attention. The Gandak-Narayani river system is one of the main reasons.
The river known as the Narayani in Nepal continues into India as the Gandak. It flows through areas including Maharajganj and Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh before moving towards Bihar. Therefore, any significant increase in water flow through this river system could potentially affect downstream areas.
The Central Water Commission has also warned that floodwater could move towards India through the Gandak River. This is why authorities in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have been placed on alert.
Which Areas in Bihar Are Being Watched?
Districts located along the Gandak River in Bihar are receiving particular attention. These include West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Saran, Muzaffarpur and Vaishali.
Authorities have stepped up preparations in anticipation of a possible rise in water levels. Monitoring has been increased, and preparations are reportedly underway to move people to safer locations if the situation deteriorates.
What Is the Risk in Uttar Pradesh?
In Uttar Pradesh, districts including Maharajganj and Kushinagar, which are close to the Nepal border, are being closely monitored. The Gandak River is particularly important when assessing the impact of water flowing from Nepal.
However, one important distinction needs to be made. At present, a major flood threat in Uttar Pradesh has not been confirmed as a direct consequence of this event. According to irrigation authorities, the Gandak’s water level was expected to remain below the danger mark. Therefore, the situation is better described as a potential risk rather than claiming that the Nepal flood will certainly cause major destruction in Uttar Pradesh.
Could West Bengal, Sikkim or Other States Also Be Affected?
The direct and immediate impact of this particular flash flood is primarily connected with the river systems of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. West Bengal, Sikkim and other states have not been placed under the same level of direct flood warning specifically because of this incident.
However, during the monsoon season, the Himalayan and Ganga-Brahmaputra river systems are interconnected. The combined effect of rising water levels and heavy rainfall can create wider regional risks. It would therefore be premature to attribute any future flooding in other states directly to this single Nepal event.
At the same time, the India Meteorological Department has forecast active monsoon conditions across several parts of the country between August 26 and September 1. Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim, Uttarakhand and several northeastern states are among the areas that could experience significant rainfall.
Therefore, the coming days will require authorities to assess both the water flowing downstream from Nepal and the possibility of heavy local rainfall.
Why Is the Himalayas Becoming Increasingly Vulnerable to Such Disasters?
The disaster in Nepal also raises a much larger question: Is the risk of sudden natural disasters increasing across the Himalayas?
The Himalayas are among the world’s most environmentally sensitive mountain regions. Glaciers, glacial lakes, steep slopes and rivers are constantly changing under natural and climatic pressures. Rising temperatures can contribute to changes in glaciers and the expansion or instability of glacial lakes, potentially increasing disaster risks in vulnerable areas.
If a large mass of ice or rock suddenly collapses into a river or glacial lake, it can generate a massive flow of water and debris moving rapidly downhill. The narrow valleys and steep terrain of the Himalayas can further increase the speed and destructive force of such flows.
Nepal has witnessed serious threats from glacial lakes and sudden floods in previous years as well. The latest disaster therefore goes beyond being a local natural calamity. It also serves as a warning about the growing disaster risks facing the Himalayan region.

The Biggest Question Now: How Many People Are Safe?

The next major concern is now India, where river systems flowing from Nepal mean that Bihar and Uttar Pradesh will need to remain particularly vigilant.
For now, the situation continues to be monitored closely. Rescue and relief operations are underway in Nepal, while India has increased monitoring of river water levels. The next few days will determine whether the impact of this Himalayan disaster remains largely confined to Nepal or whether the river systems carry its effects further into the plains of India.
