Afghanistan Bus Crash Kills 71, Including 17 Children; Deported Migrants from Iran Among Victims

The Afghanistan tragedy spotlights the migrant crisis as a deadly road crash kills 71 and reveals the dangers of unsafe travel conditions and escalating global anxieties over Iran’s mass deportation of Afghans in 2025.

New Delhi, August 20, 2025

A horrible road crash in western Afghanistan’s Herat province has left 71 people dead, including 17 children, when a bus carrying Afghan migrants who had just been deported from Iran crashed into a truck and a motorcycle and then burst into flames.

The Incident in Afghanistan

Authorities confirmed the bus was carrying Afghans who were expelled from Iran and had crossed the Islam Qala border when the awful crash occurred. After colliding, the bus caught fire, making survival impossible.

Tragically, local police said that two people in the truck and two people on the motorcycle also died.

Cause of the Accident

Provisional investigations suggest speed and driver negligence as two central causes of this tragedy. Road accidents are frequent in Afghanistan because of inadequate road networks, lack of safety standards, and reckless drivers, but officials claimed this trampling was one of the worst road crashes in decades.

Migrant Crisis Context

The tragedy occurs during a wider humanitarian crisis, with Iran deporting Afghans in huge numbers throughout 2025. Official figures show that there have been over 1.1 million Afghans removed from Iran as of this year, many of whom have to return to Afghanistan at the Islam Qala border in Herat. In just 16 days of June alone, over 500,000 Afghans were removed in total, an enormous demand for Afghanistan’s fragile infrastructure and humanitarian support.

Global Concern

The crash highlights the dangers of deported migrants while underscoring the increasing burden on Afghanistan as it seeks to absorb hundreds of thousands of returnees. Human rights organizations have called for the international community to assist with the humanitarian consequences and protect vulnerable deported migrants.
