Canon EOS R8 Mark II launches in India with a 24.2MP full-frame sensor, 40fps shooting, 5-axis IBIS, 4K 60p video and advanced autofocus
New Delhi: Canon has expanded its EOS R series with the launch of the Canon EOS R8 Mark II, a new full-frame mirrorless camera. The company has positioned the camera as an upgraded version of the EOS R8, which launched in 2023. The new model features a 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor, 5-axis In-Body Image Stabilisation (IBIS), continuous shooting at up to 40 frames per second (fps), and a new multi-controller for autofocus control.
Canon says the EOS R8 Mark II is its lightest EOS camera to feature IBIS, making it a compact option for photographers and video creators who want full-frame capabilities without a heavy body.
Canon EOS R8 Mark II Price and Availability
In India, Canon has priced the EOS R8 Mark II body at ₹1,78,995. The company has also introduced accessories for the camera. The Extension Grip EG-E2 costs ₹9,995, while the Tripod Grip HG-1000TBR costs ₹11,495.
In international markets, Canon has set the camera’s body-only price at around $1,899. Availability may vary depending on the market and region.
24.2MP Full-Frame Sensor
The Canon EOS R8 Mark II features a 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor. The full-frame sensor offers a larger light-gathering area than an APS-C sensor, which can help photographers capture images with better low-light performance and achieve a shallower depth of field.
The camera supports an ISO range of 100 to 102,400, while users can expand the range from ISO 50 to 204,800. Canon has paired the sensor with its DIGIC X processor and Dual Pixel CMOS AF II autofocus system.
The autofocus system can track subjects such as people, animals and vehicles. Canon has also added a Register People Priority feature, which allows users to register specific people and give them priority during autofocus tracking.
IBIS Comes to the EOS R8 Series
One of the biggest upgrades in the EOS R8 Mark II comes in the form of 5 axis In-Body Image Stabilisation (IBIS). The previous EOS R8 did not include in-body stabilisation.
The new camera can combine its IBIS system with compatible RF lenses to improve stabilisation. Canon claims up to 7.5 stops of stabilisation at the centre and 7 stops at the edges under its Coordinated Control IS system.
IBIS can help photographers capture sharper handheld images in low-light conditions and make handheld video footage more stable. However, stabilisation cannot replace a fast shutter speed when photographers need to freeze fast-moving subjects.
Shoots at Up to 40fps
The EOS R8 Mark II also focuses heavily on shooting speed. Its electronic shutter can capture images at up to 40fps, making the camera suitable for action, wildlife and other fast-moving subjects.
Canon has also included a Pre-Continuous Shooting feature. The camera can capture up to 20 frames before the user fully presses the shutter button, helping photographers record moments that happen just before they take the shot.
The 40fps burst mode uses the electronic shutter, which can introduce rolling-shutter distortion in some fast-moving scenes. The electronic first-curtain shutter offers a lower shooting speed of around 6fps.
Video Features for Content Creators
Canon has designed the EOS R8 Mark II for both photographers and video creators. The camera can record 4K 60p video oversampled from 6K, while Full HD recording supports frame rates of up to 180fps for slow-motion footage.
The camera also supports Canon Log 3 and Custom LUTs, giving videographers greater flexibility during post-production and colour grading.
Canon has added Slow & Fast Motion Movie and Cinema View modes. The camera also supports wired and wireless connectivity options for live streaming. Users can connect the camera through Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB and HDMI.
Updated Design and Controls
Canon has also redesigned the EOS R8 Mark II. The camera measures approximately 131.4 × 90.0 × 79.7mm and weighs around 546 grams, including the battery and memory card.
The new body takes inspiration from Canon’s classic camera designs while introducing a more angular and contemporary appearance.
Canon has also added a new multi-controller joystick on the rear. It allows users to adjust the autofocus point without taking their eyes away from the viewfinder. Users can also attach the Extension Grip EG-E2 when they want a more secure grip, particularly while using larger lenses.
16 Colour Filters and Creative Features
Canon has added 16 colour filters to the EOS R8 Mark II, including the new NegativeFilmtone and PositiveFilmtone options.
The camera also includes several creative shooting features. Its Handheld Night Scene mode offers different colour settings, while Creative Auto and Background Blur modes give users additional options for creating distinctive photos and videos.
