New Delhi: The second ODI between India and the West Indies in Guwahati was much more than a high-scoring thriller. The match produced a string of remarkable records that will make it one of the most memorable games in ODI cricket.

The two teams scored a combined 811 runs, five batters hit centuries, and Shubman Gill produced a stunning innings that rewrote the record books for ODI captains.

The West Indies posted 405 runs in 50 overs after batting first. India then chased down the target of 406 in just 43.3 overs, losing only two wickets.

But the biggest story of the match lies not just in the scorecard, but in the records that fell along the way.

Five Centuries in One ODI for the First Time

The biggest talking point from the match was the arrival of five centuries in a single ODI.

West Indies openers John Campbell scored 101, Shai Hope made 104 and Amir Jangoo smashed 114. The Caribbean side therefore produced three centuries in its innings alone.

India responded with two more centuries. Rohit Sharma scored 101, while captain Shubman Gill remained unbeaten on a sensational 223.

That took the total to five centuries in one ODI, a first in men’s ODI cricket, according to the available records.

The two teams produced almost equal numbers of century-makers, but India eventually dominated the contest and completed a record chase.

Gill Rewrites the Record Book for Captains

Shubman Gill’s innings added another major chapter to the record books.

The India captain smashed an unbeaten 223 off 133 balls. In the process, he not only powered India’s record chase but also registered the highest individual score by a captain in men’s ODI cricket.

Virender Sehwag previously held the record. He scored 219 against the West Indies in 2011.

Gill went past that mark with his unbeaten 223.

The list of ODI captains who have scored more than 200 runs now includes:

  • Shubman Gill — 223
  • Virender Sehwag — 219
  • Rohit Sharma — 208

All three players come from India, making this an exclusive record for Indian ODI captains.

Gill Completes His Second ODI Double Century

Gill’s innings did more than break the captaincy record. It also gave him his second ODI double century.

He previously scored 208 against New Zealand in 2023. With his latest double century, Gill joined Rohit Sharma as the only other Indian batter to score more than one ODI double century.

However, Gill added another record to his name with the speed of his latest double century.

He reached 200 off just 117 balls, making it the fastest double century in men’s ODI cricket.

Gill continued his assault after reaching the landmark and eventually finished unbeaten on 223, with 26 fours and eight sixes.

India Record Its Biggest Successful ODI Chase

The West Indies gave India a daunting target of 406 after scoring 405 in the first innings.

But Gill and Rohit Sharma immediately took control of the chase.

The opening pair added 255 runs for the first wicket. Rohit contributed 101 off 75 balls, while Gill kept attacking at the other end.

India reached the target in just 43.3 overs.

The victory gave India its highest successful run chase in ODI cricket.

Gill’s unbeaten 223 also became the highest individual score in an ODI run chase, adding another major record to his name.

811 Runs and Another Record for the West Indies

The two teams combined for 811 runs in the match.

The West Indies scored 405/7, their first-ever ODI total above 400. The Caribbean side produced three centuries while setting up a massive target.

India then went one step further by chasing down that total with eight wickets and 39 balls to spare.

Rohit Sharma also reached another career milestone during his century, completing 12,000 ODI runs.

So, in a single match, cricket fans witnessed five centuries, 811 runs, the fastest ODI double century, the highest score by an ODI captain, India’s biggest successful ODI chase and the highest individual score in an ODI run chase.

The West Indies walked off after putting 405 on the board, believing they had built a mountain for India to climb.

India did not just climb that mountain.Shubman Gill planted his flag at the top.
